Van Dijck brown is an essential pigment for some watercolorists, drawing its name from the famous 17th-century Flemish painter, Antony van Dyck, known for his portraits and use of rich, earthy tones. At Isaro, this pigment is a blend of black iron oxide and mauve iron oxide.
Van Dijck brown is prized for its high permanence, offering exceptional lightfastness. Its velvety texture and excellent covering power make it a versatile color, ideal for both fine details and intense washes.
Mix Van Dijck brown with ultramarine or cobalt blue to create perfect gray hues for landscapes or portraits. Combine it with Isaro yellow or yellow ochre to achieve golden brown tones, ideal for nature scenes, sunset skies, and autumnal atmospheres.
